G’Day from downunder, ok how about this idea licensed under the GPLiD
Games and applications with their own customised OS (Operating System) built into the Media such as DVD or Flash. It would just be a stripped down kernel, maybe no windowing GUI.
Linux already comes in many varieties that work a bit like this. You could just plug the game stick into your computer, turn it on and the game boots up. Heaps faster, optimised for the application. Linux is already distributed free, so from a costs perspective shipping an OS license per software is no different to that of a license per hardware. Effectively free.
Applications like Photoshop, could have extra memory on the Flash Drive for a My Documents section and access other sticks or media plugged into the computer hosting the OS/App. Applications could also run faster, not having a full OS as an overhead. More stability also.
Bypasses the need for hard drive equipped hardware in general consumer applications. Reducing costs further.
I know its just a start.
Seeds start small and get bigger with time, so too ideas.
